What to know about studying in the UK

Rules and amounts change, and each university sets its own requirements. Use this as a starting point, then confirm details on the official pages linked below. Last reviewed October 2026.

Course length

Most taught master’s degrees in the UK last one year full-time. Bachelor’s degrees usually last three years in England and four in Scotland.

How you apply

Undergraduate applications go through UCAS. Postgraduate applications usually go directly to each university.

Student visa

You need an unconditional offer and a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed university before you can apply for the Student visa.

Costs to plan for

Besides tuition, budget for the visa fee, the Immigration Health Surcharge and the maintenance funds the visa rules require, which differ for London and the rest of the UK.

Graduate route

Graduates can apply for the Graduate visa to stay and work without sponsorship. For bachelor’s and master’s graduates applying from 1 January 2027, it falls from two years to 18 months. PhD graduates keep three years.

Working while studying

Degree-level Student visa holders can usually work up to 20 hours a week during term. Check the conditions on your own visa.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Shortlist programs and check entry requirements and English scores.
  2. Apply through UCAS (undergraduate) or directly to the university (postgraduate).
  3. Meet any offer conditions and pay the deposit if one is required.
  4. Receive your CAS from the university.
  5. Apply for the Student visa with your CAS, funds evidence and the Immigration Health Surcharge.
  6. Plan your Graduate route timing. Your application date decides whether you get two years or 18 months.
